My Professional Approach to Play Therapy

My approach to play therapy is Adlerian, coupled with numerous Gestalt-based techniques as I believe in allowing the child to experience life through play. Like Adler, I believe that individuals are in control of their own fate, not a victim of it. Through play one can find their own self-regulation, and discover real self with resolution. Adopting these approaches allows me to be connected with the child and be creative with play.

To be effective in my journey with the child, at the outset I consult with the parents to gain insight about the child's individuality. My purpose is to ensure my work is child-centered, and to form a relationship that allows the child to feel safe. During the process I remain positive, non-judgmental, supportive, non-labeling and make every effort to allow the child their own thoughts, feelings, and beliefs.

Throughout the lifetime of the sessions I work cooperatively with the parent(s) to assist in understanding the play therapy process, and work on consistent rules for both homes. Professional suggestions are made, but because I recognize that collaboration is imperative, the goals that are set forth are mutual.

Play therapy is about the child's journey. They are empowered to no longer be a victim of their circumstance, but rather to be in control and confident of their own success.
